Artists Statement
"After living on the Upper West Side for four years, I took a walk through Harlem with my camera in the fall of 1987. I had been curious about the neighborhood, but that visit made me want to photograph it. The following year, I moved to Harlem, where I lived until 1994. It took about two years before I felt accepted by the people in the neighborhood. Only then did I begin photographing them in earnest. I was particularly drawn to people's gazes. Through portraits and street photography, I wanted to document Harlem as it was, and the everyday lives of the people who lived there."
Bio
Katsu Naito [Winner of the 2023 Rema Hort Mann Foundation emerging artist grant.] Japanese photographer and artist Katsu Naito (b.1964 Tokyo, JP) embarked on his photographic journey in his early twenties soon after he moved to New York City. Driven by the desire to capture emotions on film and paper, Naito began his career by photographing his fellow New Yorkers in the streets during the 1980s and meticulously developing his films in his own lab, ensuring a careful and precise quality to his print. Throughout his career, he has striven to capture or create moments of connection in his work, representing his surrounding environment in an organic and simple manner. Naito views photography as an incredible medium for preserving the emotions and the raw feelings for posterity, imbuing his images with a timeless quality. Some of his photographs of Harlem were featured in the 2017 book Once in Harlem, which sold out instantly and is highly sought after by photography aficionados. In 2019, Vogue US commissioned and published his portraits of Japanese American women who survived internment during World War II, alongside their descendants.
