About Us

Founded in Tokyo five years ago, The Fridge has emerged as a dynamic platform showcasing both emerging and established artists from Japan and around the world. Early 2023, the gallery relocated to New York City, continuing its mission to promote diverse artistic expressions and provide immersive experiences for its visitors. With a commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogues, The Fridge has curated a series of thought-provoking exhibitions that reflect its dedication to contemporary art’s evolving landscape.

The Fridge fosters collaboration at multiple creative levels, from concept to execution. The gallery has hosted a range of exhibitions that delve into themes from the philosophical and emotive to the societal. For instance, Joji Nakamura’s An Introspective Query marked his first solo exhibition at The Fridge and in the U.S., showcasing large-scale works that reflect his unique hand-painted technique and contemplative themes. Similarly, Ayako Sakuragi’s hundred and eight days presented a poignant exploration of time and perception through pinhole photography, capturing the unnoticed interstices of daily life. Antoine Wagner’s A Distant Closeness offered a meditative series of paintings inspired by nature’s enduring power, utilizing materials like sand, earth, and ashes to create textured, fossilized forms.

The Fridge has also been instrumental in facilitating collaborations that bridge fashion, digital art, and traditional mediums. The Black Thread, Black Ink group show, a collaboration between FACETASM and The Fridge, featured nine emerging artists creating monochromatic artworks, emphasizing the depth and versatility of black and grey tones. In the digital realm, The Fridge partnered with MGXS and SuperRare for the URUCU project, marking its first foray into digital art. This collaboration showcased procedural artworks that blend technology and creativity, embracing machine-intervened practices.

The Fridge demonstrates how art fosters connection and dialogue across cultural lines. Through its diverse exhibitions, innovative collaborations, and global engagements, the gallery strives to offer a distinctive and resonant platform for contemporary art.
