HIKARU MATSUBARA
Hikaru Matsubara was born in 1988 in Okayama, Japan. Growing up, Matsubara moved with his family to the US and Hong Kong until he was 9 years old and eventually came back to Japan and settled down in Kobe where he still resides today. Matsubara studied at Kyoto Sangyo University Faculty graduating in Foreign Studies before starting to work different jobs including 2 years as a fisherman in the Kobe Bay. Matsubara always had an interest in Drawing, Graphic Design and Visual Arts. In 2015 he started a tumblr account posting his ideas and sketches which quickly gained in popularity and led him to various freelance assignments and the ability to sustain himself using his talent and his creations. Matsubara today works full time as a Graphic Artist and has collaborated with Stripe Group, Journal Standard and Beams as well as designing many projects in Japan and abroad. In November 2019 his work was chosen to be on the cover of the prominent japanese lifestyle magazine 「POPEYE」and in 2018 he was awarded the Jeon Woochi and Makoto Ikeda Award from "UNKNOWN ASIA Art Contest". Matsubara has exhibited his work in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Bangkok.
